What happens if you don't vote: far-right parties get seats in the European parliament. 13 UK Independence Party seats. 2 British National Party seats.

An odd combination of ignorance, low voter turnout, misinformation and scandal contributed to this. There is no one thing to blame. This is part of a chain of events, only in part triggered by the expenses row. Which, by the way, is abysmal behaviour, but being pissed off about it is NOT an excuse to vote for a former National Front leader.

I'm very angry but there's nobody to be angry AT; this is just the latest link in a long chain of events. You can blame the near-million people who voted for the BNP; but I refuse to believe all those people are racist. The BNP likes to paint itself as the saviour of the Average White Man: they will save your job! Hurrah! And in really tiny print: the only true British citizen is a white British citizen and all other ethnicites will not be recognised and "encouraged to leave", ominously. It doesn't matter if you were born here, your parents were born here, whatever: if you're not white, you can fuck off wherever you like but you're not staying here. Keep Britain British! YEAH!

Have I mentioned that the candidate voted in in Yorkshire & Humberside referred to a black policeman who arrested him as an "inferior being"? No? How remiss of me.

Have I mentioned also that the BNP want mandatory prayer in schools? Mmhmm? You have the choice to have your choice removed! FANTASTIC.

I could rage about this bullshit all day, but there's not a shred of anything that can be done about it now. Signing petitions won't do it. We all had our chance on Thursday, and shame on you if you didn't take it.

Incidentally, the Northern Irish attitude of "oh, I'll do it on Monday" extends as far as democracy. Lazy buggers haven't started counting yet. I fully expect more utter misery later, when a man who put a leaflet through the door saying "marriage should be a sacred institution between a man and a woman" gets a European seat, courtesy of the people I have to share an island with.
